MEERUT CANTONMENT: HISTORICAL BACKGROUND


 
Meerut Cantt is a place where first salvo was fired in 1857, when the first war of Independence started. “Kali Paltan” to which Mangal Pandey belongs is situated right in the midst of this historical Cantonment. It was established sometime in early 19th century after the battle of Laswari. It is situated between rivers Ganga & Jamuna. It is well connected with the rest of Country by roads as well as by Rail. The Delhi Niti Paas Road (State Highway No. 45 also known as GT Road) passes through Meerut Cantonment.
